1757 - The Importance of Practice...

Seventh Golf Week AM Tour Tournament of the year. The tour stop: 1757. Part of me was excited because I play this course often and I know the layout (aka, the water). But when the AM Tour decided that we had to play a mixture of the Black and Blue tees... I knew we were in for some punishment. Suffice to say, I felt more black and blue after the round. Before the Hole by Hole, blow by blow recap, I knew I would be in for a rough time when I showed up exactly 10 minutes before my tee time and by the time I checked in and put on my shoes, I had time to swing exactly two 7-Irons (both flush by the way) before my group got called to the tee box. But somehow I thought I'd be okay because I played another tournament that Thursday at Worthington Manor. Boy was I mistaken. Hole 1: Par 4, 451 Yards - Setting the Tone In actuality the hole only played roughly 405 yards. But that wouldn't have mattered. The last few times I hit my driver, I was hitting a nice soft fade. So I...

1757 - I Woke Up but my Swing Didn't

First of all, I'd like to take the opportunity to thank my lovely wife Carissa for allowing me to play both days this weekend... In retrospect, I should have asked to play in the afternoon instead of the morning... I can chalk up this round to five important factors: 1) Cold weather: It was a balmy 45 degrees when I started the round and not much warmer at the end. 2) Tee Box not commensurate with Driving Distance: Since it was so cold, I probably should have played the white tees. Alas the guys I was paired with all wanted to play the Blues. Suffice to say while they felt good about their manhoods, I'm guessing they didn't feel so hot about their games. 3) 6:52 AM tee time: You read that right... 6:52 AM. At that ungodly hour, I didn't remember how to swing once I got onto the course. 4) Fresh Aeration: Didn't expect to make too many putts. 5) The course: Water on all but three holes... I showed up early enough to hit a few balls and roll a few putts bu...

The Links at Challedon - A Tale of Two Nines

Image
First tournament of the year of the Golfweek AM Tour. The Links at Challedon in beautiful but remote Mt. Airy, MD. Remote meaning it was a hefty 1.25 hour drive from my house. The theme of this round: A Tale of Two Nines...  It was a round that provided enough entertainment to inspire the best and worst of writers. To paraphrase Charles Dickens: It was the best of nines, it was the worst of nines, but not in that order... Suffice to say I salvaged a good round but could have done so much better. Preparation: 1) I managed to show up a full 30 minutes before my tee time. Enough time for me to hit a few wedges, long irons, hybrids, and my driver 2) Didn't get to chip around the practice green (that would bite me later) 3) Did get to roll a few putts Hole by hole (Gold Tees): 1) Par 5. Booming drive to the right rough, rough was not penal so I got a hefty 4-Wood on the ball, landing a mere 20 yards from the green. Hit a nice but not great lob wedge to 15 feet. S...

The Audacity of Craig's List

Image
As part of my weekly (ok fine, DAILY) trolling of Craig's List for great deals on golf items, every now and then I come across a few gems but more often than not, I come across some abject stupidity... Which brings me to this post. The golf nuts who read my blog know about the Kirkland Ball sold by Costco, for those of you who do not, here's a short recap: "My Golf Spy ran multiple tests and determined that, based on their findings, the cheap Costco ball ($15 per dozen) actually performed better in some categories (most categories!) than the expensive Pro-V1 ($48 per dozen). This seems preposterous, but it's actually true." Sadly the balls are no longer available at Costco or on Costco.com (they sold out in mere hours...) Now here is the post on Craig's List: That's not a misprint. This guy wants $70 for 12 balls...  That's roughly $5.83 per ball...  For balls that cost (no lie) $15 per dozen. The top of the line golf ball (the aforemention...

I Hate Distance Running but now I'm Running a Half Marathon!!

Hello everyone, This is my first blog post of 2017 and it took me 44 days... Oh well! Time flies... A lot has happened since my last post. We have a new president which came with a lot of controversy to say the least... But I'll try to keep the politics out of my blog (whenever possible) and keep it as a lighthearted view of my life and everything in it. There will be more golf, but a few other things too, which brings me to the title of this post... I do not have a love affair with running... So why am I running a half marathon? Simple, to keep me in shape! They say it's the journey and not the destination that defines us. I figure training for this half marathon will get me in great shape by the time beach and flag football season rolls back around... The Race: Marine Corps Historic Half Marathon Date: Sunday 5/21/2017 Location: Fredericksburg, VA at the aptly named, Hospital Hill (Doesn't sound intimidating right???) The goal: Under 3:00 Hours!! Well, I will b...
