2020 - The Year of Hindsight!
Emerson, Lake, and Palmer said it best: "Welcome back my friends to the show that never ends, we're so glad you could attend, come inside, come inside!"
Welcome to the New Year! Ordinarily this is the day where I outline a bunch of New Year's Resolutions that are bound to fail by mid-February, but I'm going to do this differently.
This year's Mantra, "Strive for Progress, not Perfection." Thank you Ed Mylett and Marie Forleo!
So for all my goals / resolutions this year, as long as I make progress towards them, I will be satisfied. The goal is to be better than yesterday...
So, the list of goals for the year:
1) More Family Time
Spend more quality time with my family and less time with unfruitful activities. Basically be better with time in general! Leave for work on time, leave work on time, waste less time on video games & excess social media, to have more time for my wife and son!
2) Eat Better
Less fast food, more whole foods, more days with only veggie protein (more palatable and less inflammatory than saying "meatless days")
3) Exercise More
Be at the gym at least four days a week. More would be great, less isn't fatal, but zero is unacceptable! The gym my wife built in the basement counts! At least 30 minutes of good intensity. Slowly incorporate some yoga in my life as well.
4) Lower my Golf Handicap
New sticks won't get me all the way there (even if they are fitted!!). But five minutes a day of drills and working out (See goal #3) should help me. Also while I hate only playing 9 holes, any time on the course will be great. I do have a goal of winning a tournament this year, stay tuned!
5) Write More
Everything from creative writing, to logging my progress (not perfection), to gathering my thoughts. Plus a written record to hold myself accountable will help! Goal is to post daily but as long as I get one weekly post in... PROGRESS!
6) Read More
I read tons of online publications as well as magazines (Golf Magazine, Golf Digest, GolfWeek, sense a theme here?), but need to get back in the habit of reading (or listening) to a wider variety books. I read to my son every night, so need to step up my game! The tentative goal is 30 books by the end of the year. In theory (and according to the opinions of some award winning authors) reading should help my writing!
7) Start a Podcast
My most ambitious goal of the year. Still working on the specific theme, but more than likely it will be golf related. I have all the tools I need to start with the possible exception of a good quality microphone but its good to have a lofty goal. An even loftier goal would be to have millions of listeners but again, progress!
8) Have More Fun!
Can't grind all of the time! With more aforementioned family time (See Goal #1) we can go out and have more fun, spend more time with friends, play some Settlers, sneak in a season of flag football, or just chill on the beach one weekend!
And that's it (so far)! I'll sign myself up for weekly updates every Sunday to see how I'm progressing towards my goals. Feel free to chime in to help me hold myself accountable.
Until then, back to the gym!
