Reston National - More Evidence that you Drive for Show and Putt for Dough
Enough of scrambles, time to get back to pure golf. This round was brought to you by all the mothers out there (Mother's Day). Thanks to my mother and to some degree my father, I'm on this Earth taking chunks out of it one stroke at a time. The fact that I managed to send my mom and my sister their cards and gifts on time is a miracle in itself. And true to fashion, I dropped them in the mailbox on the way home from Top Golf :).
Because it was Mother's Day, the course was very empty, even though I got there at 12:00 PM. And after I finished my first round in record time, I had time for another! A good 36 hole day. And even had time to call my mother after I was done.
Date: Sunday 5/11/2014 (Mother's Day)
Location: Reston National Golf Club, Reston, VA
Score: 88 & 77 (36 Hole Day)
Excuses: Not being able to read a putt the first round
Course Conditions: Amazing. Greens rolled extremely well and true (once you knew how to read them), fairways were in excellent shape, rough was penal but you could locate the ball within a decent proximity. 75% of the bunkers in good shape.
The Good: The first round I drove the ball like a champion, the second round I putted like that Sneeedeker guy! Also got my lowest round of the year so far.
The Bad: Couldn't sink a putt to save my life the first round, couldn't find a fairway the second
The Ugly: Missing a 3 foot birdie putt on the first hole of the first round, OUCH!
The first round I was a tactician off the tee. I couldn't miss a fairway, or if I did, I was in the first cut of rough and able to advance the ball without problems. On the front nine, I was 6 for 9 in Greens in Regulation. Sadly I was 0-3 in par saves on the remaining 3 holes. The big issue, I three putted three of those greens in regulation on the front... I struck the ball so well and only came out with a 42 on the front. Then came the back nine, or as refer to it, my undoing. I managed to avoid double bogeys on the first nine only to get three on the back, including finishing the round with two in a row... I missed all but two fairways and only secured one par. Overall I finished with an 88, not horrible but not to my lofty standards. The final tally of the telling stats revealed I was 1 for 8 in par saves, finished 7 for 18 in GIRs (after starting 6 for 9), and I had a total of 39 putts...
Dissatified with my round, and having plenty of daylight and plenty of space on the course, I decide to give it another go. I improved by 11 strokes. Even though I hit fewer fairways, I had the same amount of GIRs (7), I only had one 3 putt in my GIRs, was 5 for 12 in par saves, finished with 31 total putts, and managed to get two birdies. One with a solid uphill sliding putt on the Par 3 11th (after one of my playing partners holed it out from the sand for a birdie) and the other with a chip-in on the 17th. It's amazing what good chipping and putting will get you.
Lessons from this round: Drive for show, putt for Dough! Thanks to all the mothers out there for keeping your husbands, sons, and daughters off the golf course and allowing me to play 36 holes in 6.5 hours. This one's for you. Until the next time: BACK TO THE RANGE, BACK TO THE PRACTICE GREEN, and BACK TO THE GYM!!
