Fort Belvoir: Gunston - Best Round Without a Birdie

Today's round was brought to you by the Department of the Army and a 59 minute early dismissal from work.  I called up Gene and "The Rod" to link up on the links somewhere close to home and Fort Belvoir was it.

Recurring Character Profile:  Rod "The Rod" Francisco.  Solid player, great human being, has more golf equipment than Golfsmith.  More putters in his basement currently than I have ever had in my golfing life.  Dedicated rabid golfer that puts in more rounds per year than I do.  Great contact to have if you want to enjoy the finer courses, but every now and then, I see him tee it up at Greendale.  We all have to have our feel good courses (see my Herndon Centennial post).

Theme:  Normally I'm not a big fan of the term "Best player never to win..."  It just puts so much undo pressure on you to perform to other people's standards.  The Sergio Garcias, the Lee Westwoods, and the Luke Donalds of the world can attest to that.  Both Lee Westwood and Luke Donald were ranked #1 in the world and they had never won a major.  They have both won a good amount of tournaments and an obscene amount of money but no major.  I personally say let the historians battle it out and leave the players alone.  I'm sure Karl Malone, Patrick Ewing, and Charles Barkley don't need to be reminded that they never won a championship.  Were they any less great because of it?  Again, just something in human nature that we look at to hold over people's heads when their heads get too big (or sometimes before).  Which brings me to my round today.

Date: Friday 5/23/2014
Location: Fort Belvoir, Gunston Course, Ft. Belvoir, VA
Score: 77
Excuses: None, managed to show up early, hit some range balls, chipped and putted
Course Conditions: Par for the course on a military post.  Not quite the unbridled luxury of an Air Force Base golf course, but the grass on the rough, the fairways and the greens were cut to a different length.  The greens were actually in pretty decent shape and the fairways and greens were both firm.
The Good: Putting, 32 putts.  Hit the driver well.  I was one over on the back nine.
The Bad: Not much in the way of bad.  Made mistakes that would have cost me additional strokes on a more difficult course.
The Ugly: A near 3 hour front nine behind a terrible foursome.  Fortuantely the terrible 3 out of the 4 left after 9 holes.

That's right, I scored a 77.  5 over par.  And without a single birdie.  As a 10 handicap that is still an awesome score.  I missed two make able birdie putts on 11 and 17, but overall, I was proud of the round and the effort.  I hit 50% of greens in regulation, had 72% of my scores as pars (the rest were just bogeys), I had 32 putts, and I saved par 56% of the time.

But, no birdies...

Oh well, can't win them all.  Until next time: BACK TO THE RANGE, BACK TO THE PRACTICE GREEN, and BACK TO THE GYM!
