The Tradition Golf Club at Stonehouse - Sometimes, It's Just Your Day

Round two of the three round weekend and the 36 hole day.  In keeping with the tradition, or in this case, the Tradition Golf Management company; me and Joe Flatstick continue our journey through merry old Williamsburg and its great golf courses.  NOTE: By the time I'm getting around to posting this, the course is probably in really good shape.

Date: Saturday 5/31/2014
Location: Stonehouse Golf Club, Toano, VA
Score: 76
Excuses: Aerated Greens with HOUS's (Holes of Unusual Size), early start time
Course Conditions: Awful! Dime sized the holes in the greens.  Fairways were not in good shape, the rough was not terrible, but there was tall grass growing out of the drains in the fairways.  I'm guessing the mowers could not cut them and the greenskeepers hadn't gotten to them with a weed whacker yet.
        The Good: 76!!
The Bad: A triple bogey preventable by laying up
The Ugly: The 18th fairway.  There must have been 8 or 9 drains with very high grass and deep crevices.  Ugly because one of them claimed one of my balls.

Royal New Kent, Stonehouse, and Bricksire are sister courses.  The fact that I ended up playing the two that had been most recently aerated was just a bit of bad luck (dating the ugly sisters).  Not only were the holes in the greens the size of dimes, there were drainage grates on most of the fairways that were overgrown with tall grass, so your ball would disappear in the middle of the fairway (Remarkably, I only hit one all round).  We played from the White tees measuring at 6,111 yards, but the slope and rating was still a respectable 71.4 / 133.

I would love to play this course when it is a little less wet and a lot less aerated.  There are some great views, some challenging holes, and a sensible layout that wasn't too tricked up.  There were more blind shots that I generally care for on a golf course, but having a course guide or a GPS unit takes all of the mystery away.  Not to mention we were the first group out on the course so we didn't have to worry about hitting anyone.

Somehow I manage to make the best out of the situation and shoot one of the top five rounds of my golfing career.  I card a 76 (5 over par) with one birdie and one triple.  I hit 13 greens in regulation, including all nine greens on the back nine.  I was 3/5 in par saves, even on the Par 5's and +1 on the Par 3's.  I even managed 34 putts on very inhospitable greens.

Amazing what you can do with reasonable expectations and ample practice time.

Next Stop (a couple of hours later): Ford's Colony
