Old Hickory - "Drop Down and Get Your Eagle On!"
I seriously doubt that Nelly, in his semi-iconic (not really) song "Flap Your Wings" was referencing golf. But scoring an eagle on a golf course does give reason to start dancing and break into song.
Date: Saturday 6/28/2014
Location: Old Hickory, Woodbridge, VA
Score: 78
Excuses: None
Course Conditions: Awesome. Greens rolled well, traps were raked, rough was slightly penal.
The Good: The weather, 67% in par saves, 28 putts, oh yeah, and the EAGLE!
The Bad: 28% GIRs, not hitting a single par 3 in regulation.
The Ugly: Giving the eagle back to the course in the next two holes.
I have 6 eagles in my golfing career.
#1) 9/15/2010 - Redstone Arsenal Golf Course, Huntsville, AL - #14. Par 5. Drove the ball into the tall grass and was about to give up on it when my playing partner found it. I put a meaty 6 iron on it and landed 87 yards from the hole. I hit a fine sand wedge and holed out. I may or may not have freaked out. Thanks to Richard Cockley for the assist. Awesome feeling. I proceeded to par 15-18 and finish with an 82.
#2) 10/15/2010 - Williamsburg National Golf Club - Jamestown Course, Williamsburg, VA - #7. Par 5. Hit a very meaty drive and tried to go for it in two, however I landed 20 yards short of the green. It was a treacherous downhill chip so I wanted to land it short and get it running. I hit it perfectly and watched it release to the hole, and suddenly, it dropped in. Gene Huie was in attendance for this one.
#3) 12/31/2011 - Virginia Oaks Golf Course - Gainesville, VA - #6. Par 5. Hit an awesome drive and hit the approach shot 5 feet from the green in the fringe. Wanted to chip it close to give myself a tap in birdie. Ended up chipping it in. Finished the round with a 90 but still a good feeling. Don't remember my playing partner for this one.
#4) 7/7/2012 - Virginia Oaks Golf Course - Gainesville, VA - #6. Par 5. Obviously my favorite hole. Hit another awesome drive. This time I hit my approach shot too well and it sailed over the green. The chip was down a severe incline that is not known for holding a ball on the green. I hit an incredible flop onto the top part of the green, it rolls down, hits the pin, and drops in. Clint Braun was a witness to this eagle.
#5) 7/20/2013 - Falls Road Golf Course - Potomac, MD - #16. Par 5. Crushed a great drive to 210 yards. Hit a thin 3 hybrid. It landed just short of the sand trap guarding the green and magically bounced over the trap and settled 6 inches from the cup. Clint "Good Luck Charm" Braun was also on hand to witness.
#6) 6/28/2014 - Old Hickory Golf Course - Woodbridge, VA - #6. Par 5. Hit what I thought was an average drive too far right to get a good look at the green. I drive to the ball and notice that I could still see the left corner of the green with a front pin placement. I decide to go for it and hit a high cut with my 3 wood (shocker, a left to right shot with a wood). I hit probably the finest shot ever with a wood, just as I imagined it, a high fade that bounced just short of the green, rolled on, and settled 7 feet from the cup. And yes, I drained the putt. "Top Golf" Chris Kim was on hand to witness.
I had a great round. Just wish I didn't take the double on #8 and not finished +3 on par 3's. Otherwise I had a blast. Can't wait for the next eagle! It makes all of those double and triple bogeys on par 5's worth it :) :).
Until the next round: Back to the RANGE, PRACTICE GREEN, and the GYM
