Coronavirus Diaries Day 17 - Ain't No Sunshine in Georgia because the Governor is Stupid (and other random thoughts)
Been a busy week to say the least. The powers that be seem to have hit a stride with telework or maybe just overloading us to see how much we can handle... Work / life balance becomes very interesting when you're never more than 100 feet away from your work station... So
But for the week in review:
1) Rest in peace Bill Withers... Ain't no sunshine now that you're gone... He left behind some iconic music. Thank you!
2) Brian Kemp. You may remember (or not) that this man was elected the governor of Georgia after being the Secretary of State of Georgia and thus being in charge of overseeing the election that he somehow won... But voter suppression aside, the main reason for this is the unbelievable comments he made on April 2nd. After finally issuing a statewide stay-at-home order, Kemp justified his decision by saying he only now was “finding out that this virus is now transmitting before people see signs.”
Here are some facts:
A) Brian Kemp is the governor of Georgia
B) Atlanta is the capital of Georgia
C) Brian Kemp's office is in Atlanta, Georgia
D) The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is located in (drumroll please) Atlanta, Georgia.
Seriously people... Anyone who can read a map or have watched The Walking Dead can attest to how far the CDC offices are from Downtown Atlanta... If the governor of Montana or Idaho wanted COVID19 information, they would have to pick up the phone or consult local experts who have a varying degree of knowledge. The local experts available to Brian Kemp are the foremost experts in the field!!! It's like living next door to Butch Harmon if you want advice on the golf swing.
So is he incompetent or lying (or something more dangerous?) you make the call...
For more light-hearted news:
3) Had my first virtual game night using Zoom and Jack-in-the-Box. Highly recommended. Plus was able to connect with some friends who moved all the way to Denver years ago. Awesome!
4) It was my Father-in-law's birthday this week. I won't give away his age (directly) but he was alive when Germany invaded Poland. We made a special drive-by visit to see him. Of course we stayed the government suggested one fathom away (go Navy!). It was good seeing him but even better seeing his smile when he got to see Carson...
5) Made a trip to support our local restaurants. The Corner Q and of course &Pizza. I never forgot when &Pizza, Sweetgreen, and Jose Andres fed the government workers during the shutdown... Just doing my part to keep the economy stimulated (not just Netflix).
6) Just put together a new toy kitchen for Carson. Some assembly required was an understatement. I have been spoiled by years of clear instructions and good tools from IKEA... The monstrosity I put together took me a solid 2 hours and based on the quality of the material and the size and depth of the screws, it probably won't last a full 3 months of beating from a 19-24 month old... But more than likely, he will focus his attention to another toy (or the box) in a month.
7) Reminded on Friday that even though the situation outside in the world looks dire and we have lots to complain about, there is also the opportunity to be grateful. So I'll start also listing the things I am grateful for. First of all a loving and supportive wife, a rambunctious and curious son, a job that allows me to work from home, and friends and family only a facetime call away.
So I'll leave you all with this thought:
"Abundant evidence indicates that it is not human nature to learn from well-documented history, but rather to repeat it." - Norman Augustine
Until the next time, I have some yard work to do!! Stay safe, stay healthy, stay inside!
